Mike Andrade Issues Statement in Response to Juneteenth

MUNSTER – Mike Andrade issued this statement today in recognition of the 155th celebration of Juneteenth, which marks June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger proclaimed in the City of Galveston, Texas, that all slaves were now free.

“Today, we recognize a day dedicated to the celebration of freedom by our African American brothers and sisters that were victims of America’s violent slave trade in our past. Sadly, 155 years later, America is confronting systemic racism and racial injustice targeting communities of color. We as a nation, need to work together to address and better understand the issues that currently affect their communities.”

“As our nation heals from the most recent loss of life due to the racial injustice, we must not remain silent, but proclaim that Black Lives Matter. We are living in a moment of history, and it is up to all of us to fight the injustice and systemic racism that is present in our society.”

“When I am your next State Representative, I will fight alongside our communities of color to ensure all Americans can enjoy the freedoms, justice, and equality our past generations have fought so hard to protect.”
